Introduction

Our senior thesis is devoted to the comparison of English and Kazakh Vowels. In this thesis we are going to study the changes which had taken place in Old English period till now days. Besides in this senior thesis the problem of an interference and the most typical mistakes which supposed by Kazakh people in pronunciation of English vowels will be mentioned. Studying foreign language is always connected with pronunciation, phonetics and intonation. This phonetic system allows understanding the speech of the native speakers. The studying of foreign languages begins from the learning sounds and their pronunciation.

The theme of our senior thesis is topical. It attracts the attention of many philologists, teachers of the English languages and many people who begin studying English, especially by Kazakh native speakers. The topicality of the problem gave rise to the choice of the theme of our research: “Comparative analysis of vowels’ classification in English and Kazakh”.

Object of the present research are phonologic systems of the English and Kazakh languages.

Subject of the research is the vowel system in English and Kazakh.

The aim of our senior thesis is to give the comparative analysis of the phonologic system of the English and Kazakh vowels in order to reveal similarities and distinctions of vowels in compared languages at a phonetic level.

The tasks of our senior thesis are:

  • to do comparative research of the Kazakh and English phonetic systems;
  • to trace the evolution process of English vowels;
  • to give comparative analysis of English and Kazakh vowels;
  • to reveal the effective ways of training Kazakh speaking people to the English pronunciation.

This research allows to study widely Kazakh and English phonetic systems separately and find the basic similarities and differences at a phonetic level in compared languages and make corresponding selection of sounds and to promote construction of more effective technique of teaching English language for Kazakh students and schoolchildren.

Comparative studying of languages is useful means of the linguistic analysis. Deep penetration into structural features of languages gives invaluably rich material for their structurally – typological characteristics, promotes revealing similarity and dissimilarity in compared languages.

The scientific novelty of diploma consists in that «the Accepted Pronunciation» is considered, a modern British variant of the English language which always was and undoubtedly remains the standard form of a pronunciation as changes which have occurred, are described and occur in the standard last years as well as comparative analysis of the two languages (English and Kazakh) vowel system has been done.  Results of research have the theoretical importance as bring the certain contribution to typological studying languages, to the theory of language and to development of actual phonology problems, and also to the methodical theory. Comparative studying of languages is useful means of the linguistic analysis. Owing to deep penetration into structural features of languages it gives invaluably rich material for them structurally – typological characteristics, promotes revealing in compared languages of typologically similar and specific phenomena. Representing a research output for frameworks of one language, a comparative method allows revealing such laws and the facts in structure of language which remain hidden at their consideration within the limits of one language. Results of work will add the description of a modern condition of phonetic structures of the Kazakh and English languages, and will allow predicting «the Accepted Pronunciation» British variant of the English language in the near future.

The practical significance of the thesis consists that its results can be used at drawing up of textbooks on the English language for Kazakh – speaking pupils, in reading high school lectures and carrying out of seminars on phonetics of the English language. Results of degree work can be used by teachers of the English language at statement of a pronunciation in a Kazakh – speaking audience, and also at statement of Kazakh pronunciation to Englishmen and expatriots going to. Tables and illustrations of this work can be useful in rates of theoretical and practical phonetics as English, and Kazakh.

Methods of research. The basic methods of research - descriptive, based on such research methods as survey, comparison and generalization. To the analysis of the received data the quantitative technique, the component and contextual analysis have been applied as well.

 The source basis of the senior thesis consists mainly of the research of the foreign and Kazakhstani authors, data from the sites of the Internet and also analyses of works of some researchers published in periodicals.

Hypothesis: the deep knowledge of vowels peculiarities enables the proficient command of the target language (English and Kazakh).

On protection following substantive provisions are born:

- during historic, political, economic and cultural changes the phonetic system and vowel system of the English language has changed significantly;

- comparison of an articulation English and Russian vowels allows to ascertain, that they are said by means of various receptions inherent in different languages which form articulation base of each concrete language;

- supervision over character of steady mistakes of Kazakh – speaking people in the English pronunciation speak that these mistakes arise owing to interlanguage and an inter linguistic interference.

  • most vowels are similar in these two languages but there are some vowels and vowel diphthongs that are distinct according to their articulation aspect;
  • the length and shortness of vowels have important role in semantic structure of words in English while in Kazakh in does not influence the semantic change of the lexical unit.

In this thesis the complex of research technique which includes a method of the theoretical analysis of the investigated phenomena, the rather – comparative analysis, a method of supervision and a method of an experimental research is used. Last has found the expression in carrying out experimentally – phonetic research on a material of scientific and publicist texts with the subsequent mathematical data processing.

Senior thesis consists of the introduction, theoretical part, practical part, the conclusion, bibliography and list of abbreviations. In introduction we prove the topicality of chosen theme, the main problems, aims and tasks of research theme. The classification and comparison of Kazakh and English vowels phonemes are given in the theoretical part and the literary works are analyzed in our practical part. In conclusion there are summary and results of the analysis and investigations done in the work.

The conclusion resumes the general concepts and results of the analyses that were carried out.

In this thesis we used scientific literature in phonetics of XIV and XX centuries of English, Kazakh and Russian linguists such V.D.Arakin, M.A.Sokolov, A.M.Antipova, H. Kozhahmetova, I.Mamanov, N.Oralbaev, A.V.Dudnikov and also English dictionaries of D. Johnes and G. Wales.
